Gamla stan, Stockholm

Stockholm was founded in the 13th century. The city was originally fortified but after the Great Fire in 1625 in the south-western part of the Old Town, old remains of the wall were demolished. A few years later, the walls to the east were demolished and the Skeppsbron was built as a broad, pompous city street, with grand 17th century houses, which met the visitors who came by boat. At the beginning of the film we see some of the 17th century houses located at the Skeppsbron. We follow Ferkens alley to Österlånggatan. Österlånggatan was formerly one of the Old Town's main streets but when the Skeppsbron was completed, the street lost its importance as the main street. Today, the street is quiet and there are not as many tourists find their way here. We then follow Prästgatan a short distance to Junotäppan at Storkyrkoskolan [the Great Church school]. There we see the statue "Youngster climbs horse", by Ivar Johnsson. Then we continue our walk through the alley of Mårten Trotzig (not in the film due to graffitti) to Västerlånggatan, which is one of the major tourist routes in the Old Town. We divert at the German brink and follow it to Mälartorget and the metro station ("Gamla stan").
