How I Filmed 500 Miles of the Camino by Myself

So who was actually filming me on the Camino de Santiago? Well… let’s meet the crew. In this video, I’m going behind the scenes of how I filmed the Camino while walking it — the camera gear I carried, how I decided what to film each day, how I got footage back home, and what happened when things started going wrong. The whole filming setup only weighed 2.4 pounds, but over the course of the walk it turned into 1,618 clips, 35 hours of footage, and 1.12 TB of data. Every day, I would film what I was seeing, what I was feeling, the towns I passed through, the terrain, the weather, the coffee, the rooms, the little moments, and whatever made me stop and say, “wow, that’s pretty.” Part of the reason I wanted to film so much was to create a video legacy for my grandkids — something they could look back on someday and see what Poppy did. And honestly, something I could look back on too, so I could relive some of the great moments from this walk. Of course, not everything went smoothly. We had camera setting problems, audio problems, memory card issues, and a few very improvised Amazon pickups along the way. Somehow, we kept the whole thing going. And once I sent the footage home, Chase had the hard job: taking hours and hours of clips and turning them into the Camino series. A lot of it made the videos — and a whole lot more ended up on the cutting room floor. If you’re thinking about filming your own Camino, travel adventure, or long walk, the moral of the story is simple: it’s not all going to be great. Most of it might not even be good. But get out there and start shooting anyway — because a little editing goes a long way.
