Morning Devotional for Adults | Thursday, July 16, 2026 =================== False Victory! “Do you not know this from ancient times, from the beginning of humankind, that the joy of the wicked is short, and the gladness of the godless but for a moment?” — Job 20:4-5 The twentieth chapter presents the second speech of Zophar of Naamath, who interrupts abruptly due to the deep agitation caused by the patriarch’s previous warnings. Feeling wronged, Zophar decides to structure a vehement argument focused exclusively on the fleeting nature of the sinner’s prosperity. He asserts that even if the pride of the wicked rises to the heavens and his head touches the clouds, he will ultimately perish forever like his own dung. He starkly describes how ill-gotten pleasures, which at first taste as sweet as honey under the tongue, transform into viper's gall within the entrails, forcing the oppressor to vomit up his ill-gotten riches. The advisor concludes by decreeing that utter darkness will devour his treasures and that heaven itself will expose his iniquity. This simplistic and inflexible approach conflates the ultimate consequences of sin with immediate retribution in the present. Zophar expounds irrefutable prophetic truths about the final judgment awaiting rebellion; however, his grave error lies in using this theology to condemn an upright man in the midst of his suffering. By insisting that any loss of resources constitutes automatic proof of divine curse, the participant distorts the fairness of the Creator's plans. This stance indirectly fuels the accusations the adversary makes in the invisible conflict, seeking to demonstrate that human beings act out of self-interest. The tendency to erect walls of judgment and pigeonhole our fellow human beings into rigid frameworks easily infiltrates our daily lives. We fall into the subtle error of measuring a person's fellowship based solely on the outward appearances of their life: whether their family seems perfect, whether their talents shine in Sabbath activities, or whether they enjoy constant material stability. When we observe a brother or sister stumbling in their temper, a young person momentarily ensnared by worldly temptations, or someone facing inexplicable trials in their daily work, suspicion incites us to conclude that they have neglected their consecration. Scripture dismantles this Pharisaical habit by reminding us that the Creator allows the crucible of suffering to purify character, and that spiritual maturity is not demonstrated by a life free of difficulties, but by a faith that rests fully on the merits of Christ Jesus in the midst of the storm. Inspired testimonies highlight the attitude that should prevail in dealing with the afflicted: "Harsh judgment and a lack of sympathy drive away the influence of the Holy Spirit... The Redeemer of the world never applied the truth to crush the broken soul. Blind zeal that seeks faults in others destroys practical piety and disfigures divine love. Heaven today requires followers who bring unselfish comfort, upholding the fallen instead of weaving conjectures about their suffering" (Ellen G. White, The Ministry of Healing, p. 109). Our salvation is assured only in the atoning sacrifice of the Savior, who, being the spotless and undefiled Lamb, accepted to bear the guilt of our rebellions, suffering public humiliation and death on the cross to bestow upon us the garments of His holiness. He is our High Priest who today ministers in the heavenly sanctuary, offering His timely grace to give us power over sin. Genuine faith purifies the intentions of the soul and empowers us to set aside theoretical severity. By fixing our gaze on our Intercessor, we learn to walk with humility, extending mercy and patience to those who are passing through the crucible of spiritual refinement. ========================= Morning Devotional for Adults 2026 Morning Devotional for Youth 2026 Morning Devotional for Women 2026 Morning Devotional for Teens 2026 Morning Devotional for Children 2026 Morning Devotional for Toddlers 2026 Revived by His Word 2026 ============= Morning Meditations 2026 Morning Devotional 2026 Christian Morning Devotionals 2026 Today's Devotional 2026 Christian Devotionals My Devotional 2026 Christian Messages Devotional Readings 2026 Ellen G.
