Morning Devotional for Youth | Thursday, July 16, 2026 =================== Without Fear “Do you not know that the triumph of the wicked is short-lived, and that the joy of the godless lasts only a moment?” — Job 20:5 (NIV) A young woman who enthusiastically participated in the Pathfinder club committed a minor disciplinary infraction during summer camp. Driven by anxiety and fear of rejection, she tried to cover up her mistake by falsely blaming another instructor on social media. At first, the lie worked, and her reputation remained unscathed, bringing her a sense of peace. However, as the days passed, inner guilt and remorse clouded her joy; she couldn't pray in peace or look her church friends in the eye for fear of being found out. She understood that the supposed success built on deceit lasts only an instant, which prompted her to ask for forgiveness, accept the consequences, and restore her integrity before her community. This stark description of the fleeting joy of those who act against the principles of Heaven is the core of Zophar's intervention in Job 20. At the beginning of his second speech, this advisor displays extreme impatience with the patriarch's arguments and resorts to solemn rhetoric to describe the downfall of the wicked. He asserts that, although the proud may try to elevate themselves to the heavens and savor wickedness beneath their tongue, their triumph will be as fleeting as a night's dream. Zophar details how ill-gotten gains become poison within and how divine justice ultimately strips the oppressor of their illusions, though he makes the mistake of rigidly applying this general truth to Job, concluding that his present misery demonstrates a supposed hidden hypocrisy. For the new generations who live in a secularized environment that promotes quick success, fleeting pleasures, and academic opportunism, this passage offers an urgent call to spiritual wisdom. Modern culture saturates youth with the illusion that disregarding rules and living selfishly leads to lasting happiness. However, Scripture reveals that prosperity apart from the Creator is extremely fragile and leaves the soul vulnerable to anxiety. True motivation for young people lies in understanding that a life of joyful obedience builds a strong character that cannot fear the judgments of time. The inspired pen warns us about the subtle snares of the world's false prosperity: "The enemy presents the pleasures of sin as desirable, but their end is always bitterness and emptiness of the soul… Youth who fix their eyes on the Savior will find lasting peace and an incomparably tender love that dispels fear of the future, granting us the assurance of salvation in the face of the fleeting illusions of this earthly life" (Messages to Young People, p. 134). Our Redeemer overcame the power of deception to secure our eternal destiny, instilling in us the firm hope of His soon return. The adversary seeks to sow discouragement in young people who see the dishonest methods of their secular peers flourishing, inciting them to abandon the standards of the Word. However, a genuine revival strengthens the faithfulness of Adventist youth, enabling them to walk uprightly and witness with power. Daily faithfulness is the greatest shield against the fickleness of this time. Call to Action: Is there an academic, professional, or personal goal you're trying to achieve today through an ethical shortcut or subtle deception?
