Title: The Clinical Culture We Create: Lessons Learned from Implementing Serious Illness Communication and Palliative Care Interventions Across Contexts Speaker: Joanna Paladino, MD Assistant Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School Associate Director of Research, Continuum Project Division of Palliative Care and Geriatric Medicine Co-Director of the Research and Education Core, Center for Optimal Aging and Serious Illness Massachusetts General Hospital MUHC Hybrid Medical Grand Rounds Tuesday, 5/5/2026 at 12h00-13h00 RI-Auditorium ES1.1129 Educational objectives •Recognize how our professional values & beliefs 'show up' in our day-to-day clinical practice when caring for patients with serious illness •Describe the evidence-based benefits of serious illness communication and palliative care interventions •Identify clinical culture and context factors that facilitate or impede implementation and practice change, including strategies to shift culture in support of this work•Apply 2–3 practical strategies to strengthen a local culture of serious illness care Biosketch of Joanna Paladino, MD Dr. Paladino is a palliative care physician investigator at the Mongan Institute Center for Optimal Aging and Serious Illness at Massachusetts General Hospital who serves as the Co-Director of the Research and Education Core. She has focused her career on designing, studying, and scaling a system-level serious illness communication intervention (Serious Illness Care Program) that includes structured communication tools, clinician skills training, and systems-innovations, including EHR integration. She has partnered with health systems and national organizations to adapt, implement, and study SICP across specialties, clinical settings, and diverse patient populations. Dr. Paladino's research methods include intervention design, mixed-methods, pragmatic clinical trials, and implementation science. She serves as a PI on foundation grants focused on improving communication and decision-making in early dementia care and as a co-investigator on several U.S. federally funded projects, including: 22-site SCOPE Leukemia Trial testing primary vs. specialty palliative care for patients with acute leukemia and Equity in Caregiving Study.
