Was India really an economic mess before the British arrived?

How rich was India before the British arrived — and what exactly did colonialism take? Paris, 1756. Denis Diderot held a piece of cloth from Pondicherry that had been washed and sun-bleached again and again, yet its red dye refused to fade. He had a letter describing the dyeing process in detail. He followed it exactly. It failed. Even France's leading chemist could not reverse-engineer what Indian artisans had perfected over thousands of years. Diderot finally admitted, in his Encyclopédie, that he simply did not know how India did it. Welcome back to Chronoclarity! In this video we look at the economic state of the Indian subcontinent that Europeans arrived to trade with — and to loot — and ask what India's economy actually looked like before colonial rule reshaped it. In this video, we dive deep into: India's share of world manufacturing (22–24%) and the cotton textile dominance that clothed the world The metallurgical edge — Wootz steel, Maratha artillery, and the Mysore rockets that became the Congreve rocket The trade networks — Banjara caravans, Khatri and Chetti merchants moving goods across continents The banking system — Jagat Seths, and how the Hundi worked as a financial instrument from Russia to Southeast Asia The insurance system, economic inequality, and why proto-industrial India never got to industrialise Was colonialism only political rule? Or was its deepest victory economic?
