How One Loose Wire Led to the Francis Scott Key Bridge Disaster

On March 26, 2024, the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after the container ship Dali lost power and struck one of the bridge’s support piers. But the story did not begin with the impact. It began deep inside the ship — with a small wire, a breaker, a blackout, and a chain of technical failures that left a nearly 1,000-foot vessel drifting toward one of Baltimore’s most important bridges. In this documentary, we break down how the disaster unfolded minute by minute: the Dali’s departure from Baltimore Harbor, the loss of propulsion and steering, the emergency radio call, the police response that stopped traffic, and the tragic gap that left highway workers still on the bridge. We also examine the NTSB’s findings, the design vulnerabilities of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the human cost of the disaster, and what Maryland’s planned replacement bridge is supposed to change. Six highway workers lost their lives that night. This video is intended to explain what happened respectfully, clearly, and factually — and why the smallest failure inside a ship can become the first domino in a much larger catastrophe.
