Forgotten Founding Father: Francis Lightfoot Lee, the Duty-Bound Virginia Gentleman

Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Savior of the Continental Army at Valley Forge. Drafter of the Articles of Confederation. Respected by Northerner and Southerner alike. Known as the “sweetest” of the Lee family, and probably the most politically effective. Born at Stratford Hall, educated in Classical virtue at home, and later settled on frontier land in Loudoun County, he entered politics through the House of Burgesses, married Rebecca Plater Tayloe, and built a private life at Menokin while continuing public service. A reluctant patriot who participated in politics out of duty rather than dreams of self-aggrandizement, Francis Lightfoot Lee was trusted and chosen by Virginia to represent the state in Congress. So, in 1775, he journeyed to Philadelphia for the Second Continental Congress, where he worked on wartime administration, the Board of War, and the Articles of Confederation, and on August 2, 1776, he signed the Declaration of Independence. As a quiet figure in the Continental Congress, Francis Lightfoot Lee was known by everyone from his beloved brothers to John Adams and Dr. Benjamin Rush for judgment, steadiness, and commitment to steady and important committee work rather than flowery speeches, along with his deep and abiding commitment to his brothers, as shown by his protest resignation during an attack on Richard Henry Lee, and his effective adoption of his brother William’s two orphaned daughters after his eventual retirement from politics in 1779, followed by his death in 1797 shortly after his beloved wife Becky’s.
