ALATRISTE The name Diego Alatriste y Tenorio has a very curious story behind it, one that blends a promise between friends and a nod to classic Spanish literature. Arturo Pérez-Reverte didn't choose those names at random: 1. The surname "Alatriste" (A tavern promise) The surname comes directly from a close Mexican friend and editor of Pérez-Reverte: the writer and editor Sealtiel Alatriste. According to the author himself, the idea was born during a night of partying and tequila in the Guerrero neighborhood of Mexico City. While they were looking for adventure books, Pérez-Reverte promised Sealtiel that one day he would create a fictional character and give him his surname. And so it was: when he began to develop the soldier of the Spanish Tercios, he kept his promise. (As a real historical curiosity, the surname Alatriste seems to have a Basque origin, derived from the name of a farmhouse in Irún, Gipuzkoa, called "Alatrista"). 2. The second surname "Tenorio" (The Hispanic Myth) The captain's full name is Diego Alatriste y Tenorio. Pérez-Reverte added "Tenorio" because he believed that a character with such a sense of mysticism, danger, and melancholy could not escape the essence of the transgressively Hispanic. It is a direct homage to the great universal myth of Spanish literature: Don Juan Tenorio. 3. The name "Diego" Although it is a classic and very Castilian name for a soldier of the Golden Age, the author himself has commented that he was looking for a sonorous, dry, and commanding name that would perfectly fit the taciturn and tough personality of his hero. Furthermore, "Captain" is not a real military rank (he was simply a soldier of the Old Tercios), but a nickname he earned for his experience and for leading a risky raid on a river in Flanders.
