Born in Derbyshire, Dave's rise to fame began after being discovered by a representative from the Denman Variety Agency, who immediately recognised his exceptional talent and signed him to a long-term contract. From there, Dave worked with many of the country's leading nightspots and quickly emerged as a nationally known entertainer. By the early 1970s, Dave was performing an astonishing 365 nights a year, earning multiple Clubman's Gazette "Artiste of the Year" awards and receiving more votes than all other contestants combined. His popularity was such that when he withdrew from competition, he still attracted more votes than the rest of the field put together. In 1972, Dave starred in Terry Cantor's "A Night of the Varieties" at the newly rebuilt Arcadia Theatre in Skegness, where attendance records were repeatedly broken, leading to an extended season the following year. He later starred as "Buttons" in Cinderella at the famous City Varieties Theatre in Leeds, becoming one of the theatre's most successful pantomime performers. Throughout his career, Dave performed before more audiences than almost any other artist in England, earning admiration from fans and fellow entertainers alike. His agent and close friend Jack Denman described him as "one of the finest all-round entertainers in the country at any level." This album stands as an important piece of British entertainment history and a snapshot of Dave Betton at the very beginning of an extraordinary career.
