Pruning My African Style Serissa, Part 1, The Bonsai Zone, July 2025
With the help of digital images, I'm pruning and styling my Serissa japonica that is inspired by African Acacia trees and Pierneef, an African landscape painter. In part one of this series, I'm giving the tree an initial shaping and in part two, I'll be doing a detailed pruning. Serissa japonica is a flowering plant in the family Rubiaceae. It is the only species in the genus Serissa. It is native to open sub-tropical woodlands and wet meadows in southeast Asia, from India, and China to Japan. It's common names are "snowrose", "tree of a thousand stars", and "Japanese boxthorn".
