It is located in the department of Yoro, in central Honduras, 160 km north of the capital, Tegucigalpa. Coyoles Central initially served as a company town for Standard Fruit Company workers and was one of the main settings for Ramón Amaya Amador's book, Prisión Verde (Green Prison). In this video, we learn about Palo Verde, a small community of Standard Fruit Company workers for over a hundred years. This same Palo Verde is mentioned in Ramón Amaya Amador's book, PRISION VERDE (GREEN PRISON). In fact, Ramón Amaya Amador worked in these fields during his early youth, beginning his career as a writer. Palo Verde is located just beyond the Coyoles Central airport. At the end of the airport runway, you find Palo Verde, a small but beautiful green community. Here, you can see the Dole lookout point. From the lookout point, you can see the vastness of the Standard Fruit of Honduras banana fields, which have been producing bananas for over a hundred years. The United Fruit Company began operations in Honduras in 1912. It began operations in Tela, Atlantida, and then expanded to the municipality of El Porvenir, also in Atlantida. There, it purchased the shares of what was then called Vaccaro Brothers Company and later transformed it into Standard Fruit Company. The Standard Fruit Company built a railroad connecting the port city of Tela and La Ceiba in Atlantida, and from La Ceiba to Coyoles Central, passing through the city of Olanchito Yoro and hundreds of banana and sugarcane fields along the railroad. This railroad operated in its entirety and at full capacity from its construction and while it was under the management of the Standard Fruit Company Rail Road until the company handed it over to the state of Honduras, marking the end of the railroad, as politicians turned it into a piñata and scrap metal. Cynically, they used the same profits from the sale of the railroad to buy and operate their own fleets of buses and trucks. How ironic, right? The Sandford Fruit Company built bridges, ports, airports, schools, health centers, and police stations, and much of this benefited the population. Although there were many elements that weren't entirely good, and some were downright bad, it was a time of greater opportunities in times when there weren't many. United bought the best land from farmers to convert it into banana farms. This was very common from 1912 to the 1930s. The irony is that the farmers sold their land and, with the payments in dollars, lived a great life rubbing shoulders with the company's masters. But when the dollars ran out, they were simply farmers looking for work as farmers on the same land they had sold four or five years earlier. Today, the airport, which has a 1,250-meter-long runway, is still located in Coyoles Central. It is used almost daily by small planes that spray poison on the banana plantations of Coyoles Central and the surrounding area, mainly Palo Verde. In the past, this work was done by human labor and was terrifying for the poisoners, who did it at night with the help of hydraulic pumps that propelled the poisoned water over the plantations. This was deadly work, as the poison seriously damaged the body and health of the poisoners. I learned from the testimony of those who witnessed it firsthand. On Saturdays, no work was done; even on Sundays, the poisoners would go out for walks in their formal attire, which at that time was white shirts, the trend. When they sweated, these shirts would turn blue from the poison impregnated in their skin. With the implementation of irrigation by plane, this ended after 1954. Palo Verde has always been an important part of these banana plantations, covering hundreds of hectares of bananas that require Palo Verde to be cared for and harvested. This has been the case for more than a hundred years in this immense Aguan Valley.
