The RN23, or National Route 23, is a 260-kilometer-long highway that crosses the vast Yoro department in the Republic of Honduras. The Yoro Highway begins in the municipality of Santa Rita, Yoro, just 20 kilometers from the CA5 highway, Honduras' most important road connecting the country's two largest cities: the capital, Tegucigalpa, and San Pedro Sula, the country's industrial capital. Route RN23 begins at the junction with Route RN21, which connects the city of El Progreso, Yoro, to the CA5 highway. At kilometer 20, there is a turnoff to Yoro. From there, it is 260 kilometers to the city of Saba in the department of Colón, where this important route, RN23, ends. Along its 260 kilometers, it connects the city of Yoro, known as the "City of Rain of Fish," with all the municipalities of the department. These are the names of its 11 municipalities: Yoro Arenal El Negrito El Progreso Jocón Morazán Olanchito Santa Rita Sulaco Victoria Yorito Once the State of Honduras was declared, with Licenciado Dionisio de Herrera as its first Supreme Head of State, Honduran territory was divided for the first time according to the 1825 Constitution; thus, the department of Yoro was recognized and created. The municipal capitals closest to Highway RN23 are: Santa Rita, Morazán, El Negrito, Yoro, Jocón, and Olanchito. The municipalities of Subirana, Trinidad, Yorito, and El Progreso are farther away. National Route 23, or Highway RN23, was opened in 1970, but its paving is still incomplete. In Honduras, 99% of those who have served as representatives, mayors, presidents, and other high-ranking officials have dedicated themselves to looting and destroying the public treasury. The state has become a piñata, as corruption has been an evil that has not been eradicated in Honduras. Those who aspire to politics know that millions are at stake and that they can seize the people's money. That is their goal, and that has always been the reason why Honduras remains mired in this situation. 99% of those seeking a government position already have the intention of carrying out this scheme. The paving of this RN23 highway is interrupted at the entrance to the city of Yoro, the city of the rain of fish. From there, it is more than 60 kilometers of a dirt road or bridle path. It is a very rough road that can only be traveled in 4x4 vehicles during rainy times since the terrain is very unstable and ditches, puddles and potholes form, making it almost impossible for two-wheel drive vehicles. That is why the situation must be taken into account when traveling from Yoro city to San Marcos de Olanchito. Upon arriving in San Marcos, the road is very well paved with asphalt, and from there a complete highway begins, although it's only two lanes, which isn't a problem since it's not heavily trafficked. This road crosses the Nance Valley, reaching Coyoles Central and Olanchito without any issues. Just be aware of the mounds in the village of Coyoles. Upon arriving in San Marcos, you immediately experience a different climate and feel the heat of the Aguan Valley, where vast banana plantations grow. These banana fields belong to the Standard Fruit Company and have been cultivated since 1913, under the management and control of the Standard Fruit Company, which was a subsidiary of the United Fruit Company since 1912 when it was the Vaccaro Brothers Company in the El Porvenir Valley of Atlántida. Traveling along Highway RN23, you'll discover unique landscapes that will make your mind wander and evoke different sensations. The climate is also quite varied; there are very hot areas, but also zones where the temperature is slightly stable and very pleasant, especially in the higher elevations, in the high mountains. The Emerald Hummingbird and Jamo Route: these creatures are very famous in this area. In fact, Olanchito celebrates a Jamo Festival or Carnival, and the Emerald Hummingbird is a distinctive endemic species of this Nance Valley, which Route RN23 traverses.
