The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is a strange sequel because I actually think it is better than people remember… but it also shows why the LEGO movie franchise fell apart. In this Cartoon Palooza review, I revisit The LEGO Movie 2 and look at why this movie struggled to connect with audiences after the first LEGO Movie, The LEGO Batman Movie, and The LEGO Ninjago Movie. Was it franchise fatigue? Was the surprise of the first movie impossible to recreate? Or did The LEGO Movie 2 arrive at the wrong time? I also talk about what still works in the movie: the sibling rivalry story, Emmet’s character arc, Rex Dangervest as a parody of tough-guy masculinity, the musical direction, the animation style, and the movie’s message about growing up without losing your imagination. The LEGO Movie 2 may not be as fresh as the original, but as a closing chapter about siblings, play, maturity, and creativity, I think it deserves another look.
