Toy Story 2 is one of those sequels that probably should not have worked as well as it did. In this Cartoon Palooza review, I revisit Toy Story 2 and look at why it still stands as one of Pixar’s strongest sequels. I talk about the animation improvement from the first Toy Story, the movie’s sharper humor, Jessie’s heartbreaking backstory, Woody’s identity crisis, Stinky Pete’s role as a villain, and how the film expanded the Toy Story world without losing the heart of the original. I also discuss why Toy Story 2 may have helped set the standard for modern animated sequels. Instead of simply repeating the first movie, it asks a deeper question: what happens when a toy realizes that being loved by a child cannot last forever?
