A walk through the city of Asha, located in the western Chelyabinsk region near the Karatau Mountain ridge on the Sim River (a tributary of the Belaya River) at the confluence of the Asha River. Chelyabinsk is 310 km by road, located practically on the border with the Republic of Bashkortostan. It is 100 km from Ufa. Population: 27,442 Asha was founded in 1898 with the construction of the Asha-Balashovsky Ironworks. It has been a city since 1933. The city's main enterprise is the Asha Metallurgical Plant. There is also a lighting plant (electrical fittings). There is also a construction materials factory. There is an industrial technical school and a branch of the South Ural State University. The city boasts a history and local history museum, a nature museum, and a museum and exhibition center. In 1990, the amateur football club "Metallurg" was founded. The Adzhigardak ski resort is located near Asha. Asha Station, also named "Asha," on the Kuibyshev Railway, passes through Asha along the historic route of the Trans-Siberian Railway. On June 4, 1989, just 11 km from Asha Station, on the Asha-Ulu-Telyak section, the worst train disaster in the history of Russia and the USSR occurred. As two passenger trains, Novosibirsk-Adler and Adler-Novosibirsk, were passing each other, a powerful explosion occurred in a cloud of light hydrocarbons, resulting from an accident on the nearby Western Siberia-Urals-Volga Region pipeline. A total of 1,284 people were on board the two trains at the time of the tragedy. 575 were killed and another 623 were injured.
