It became the fourth power to possess atomic weapons. For 36 years, from 1960 to 1996, France conducted more than 200 nuclear tests, from the edge of the Sahara Desert in Algeria to the idyllic atolls of Polynesia. These tests were carried out in utmost secrecy and punctuated by serious accidents. It took more than half a century for the secret documents to finally be revealed.
