Their first meeting took place in the Algerian desert in 1960, during the first atomic bomb tests. Their final farewell came in 1995, on the Mururoa atoll, during the last hydrogen bomb tests. Thirty-five years of an exhilarating and tragic shared adventure. In 1998, Bernard Ista died of cancer. It all began in 1960. Bernard Ista was an engineer and dreamed of traveling the world... He joined the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). From 1960 to 1995, with the permission of his superiors, Bernard Ista filmed at all the test sites and during all the tests. He filmed and wrote a daily chronicle of these 35 years, from the flyovers of the launch site to games and parties with friends, from atmospheric tests to family swims in the lagoon, from his youthful enthusiasm to his mature doubts. He died from it, and so did his friends... Where were they contaminated? In the Sahara? In Polynesia? At the lab in Paris? Bernard Ista's images and notebooks show and recount the other side of this adventure that was the construction of the French atomic bomb and the acquisition of an independent defense policy. Far from being a militant indictment, his daily account brings to life from within the 35 years of the confrontation between the military and civilians with the bomb. He thus humanizes and complements the official history as it is written in the films of the Armed Forces' film service. After 50 years of "national security secrecy," the State adopted a law in January 2010 recognizing and compensating the victims of French nuclear tests. "Victims of the French Atomic Bomb," created using previously unseen footage and the notebooks of Bernard Ista, is a posthumous tribute to the veterans and civilian victims, both Algerian and Polynesian, of French nuclear tests. In total, 150,000 people—enlisted personnel, conscripts, career military personnel, and CEA (French Atomic Energy Commission) civilians—participated in the 210 French nuclear tests.
