LIONEL 2037 CLEAN REPAIR REWIRE SERVICE "PART 1" TRAIN SHOW"SOLD FOR PARTS"
This is Part One of a full teardown, cleaning, and restoration process on a classic postwar Lionel 2037 steam engine here at Grampy’s Lionel Trains. In this video, I walk you step by step through the deep-cleaning phase, starting with mineral spirits to remove decades of built-up grease, oil, and grime from the gears, frame, wheels, and running gear. We inspect and clean the gear train, pickup rollers, and brush plate, making sure everything moves freely and electrical contact surfaces are clean and reliable. From there, I move on to WD-40 as a secondary cleaning step to help loosen stubborn residue and surface rust that mineral spirits leave behind, followed by careful drying to remove all excess moisture and lubricant. You’ll also see detailed work on the smoke unit area, including removing old smoke residue without damaging the surface, and preparing parts for final finishing. For the first time on the channel, I’m also trying Boeshield T-9 rust and corrosion protection as an alternative to oil, applying it to the frame and wheels to help encapsulate remaining surface rust without attracting dirt. Throughout the video, I explain why each product is used, what to look for during inspection, and how proper cleaning affects performance, electrical pickup, and long-term reliability. This video stops here while I wait on parts coming in from Jeff Kane, the Train Tender, and in Part Two we’ll reassemble the engine and bring it back to life.
