The European Parliament has approved tariff reductions on several US imports, fulfilling the EU's part of a trade agreement reached last year and averting a new round of tariff disputes between the world's two largest trading partners. US President Donald Trump reached a framework agreement with the European Union in July of last year, under which the EU agreed to remove tariffs on US industrial goods in exchange for the US imposing a 15% tariff on most goods from the EU. Nearly 11 months later, the EU had still not implemented the tariff reductions on US imports, prompting Trump to threaten "much higher" tariffs if the EU did not take action by July 4. The EU is expected to meet this deadline after the legislation cleared its final major hurdle with the European Parliament's approval. The legislation also extends the exemption of US lobster imports from tariffs, a limited agreement reached with Trump during his first presidential term. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on social media, “An agreement is an agreement, and the EU is delivering on its commitments.” Erik Severinson, chief commercial officer of Volvo Cars, which has car factories in Europe and the United States, said that increased predictability would help with production planning, supply chain management, and investment implementation more effectively. Industry groups from Germany, the largest European exporter to the United States, generally welcomed the vote, though they stressed that U.S. tariffs remained a significant challenge. They added that the onus was now on the United States to fully implement the Turnberry Agreement. While Tuesday’s vote averted the tariffs Trump had threatened to impose on July 4, it left many questions unanswered. On Monday, Trump said he would impose a 100% tariff on French wine unless Paris scrapped its digital sales tax. Meanwhile, the United States is required to impose its 15% tariffs on European goods after the US Supreme Court struck down Trump's previous global tariffs. The Trump administration intends to reinstate the tariffs stipulated in the Turnberry Agreement by July 24. The legislation passed by the European Parliament, which expires at the end of 2029, includes a set of safeguards that allow the EU to suspend concessions if the United States violates the terms of the Turnberry Agreement.
