The Palestinian national forces called on President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday to urgently convene a meeting of the secretaries-general of the Palestinian factions, deeming it a national imperative that cannot be postponed. The aim of this meeting is to launch a comprehensive national dialogue that establishes a genuine political partnership, develops a unified national and resistance strategy to confront current challenges, and addresses major national issues, foremost among them reaching an agreement on holding comprehensive Palestinian elections, including elections for the Palestinian National Council. This came in a joint statement issued by the Palestinian forces, which include Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine. They emphasized that this would guarantee the broadest possible participation and fair representation for all Palestinian forces and groups, based on the premise that expanding participation in the National Council would strengthen the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), renew its national legitimacy, and solidify its role as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. The Palestinian forces explained in their statement that their national and historical responsibility compels them to work by all means to strengthen national unity and entrench the principle of genuine partnership in national decision-making, ensuring the participation of all segments of the Palestinian people in shaping the future of their national cause and defending their inalienable rights. She pointed out that the Palestinian cause is experiencing its most dangerous phase, especially with the ongoing genocidal war waged by the Israeli occupation against our people in the Gaza Strip, the escalating aggression in the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem, and the accompanying systematic policies of forced displacement, ethnic cleansing, annexation, and the imposition of facts on the ground. The Palestinian factions stated that any steps related to rebuilding and developing national institutions, including the draft provisional constitution for the State of Palestine, the law on political parties, the electoral system for the Palestinian National Council, and the issuance of related decrees, must be based on a comprehensive national consensus and inclusive dialogue. This will strengthen the legitimacy of national institutions, preserve Palestinian unity, and enshrine the approach of partnership and integration as the fundamental guarantee for protecting the national project and confronting existential challenges. They also emphasized that the Palestinian people need to develop their national institutions and enhance their resilience in confronting the Zionist colonial project, in line with their national priorities. In another context, while negotiations between representatives of Israel and Lebanon continue in Washington, reaching an agreement still seems distant amidst the ongoing violence in southern Lebanon and the Israeli army's insistence on remaining. Israeli warplanes launched two airstrikes targeting the outskirts of Nabatieh al-Fawqa in southern Lebanon, according to the National News Agency. The Israeli army also carried out bulldozing and arson operations against houses in the town of Markaba, also in southern Lebanon, the same source reported. Meanwhile, the Israeli army announced that four of its soldiers, including two officers, were wounded in a clash with a militant in southern Lebanon on Thursday. The army explained that one officer sustained moderate injuries, while another officer and two soldiers suffered minor injuries in the same incident, describing it as a "close-range engagement." Despite the ongoing efforts of negotiators in Washington, which have been underway for weeks, to bridge the gaps between the warring parties, Israeli airstrikes continued to target wide areas in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley to the east, demonstrating that the initial ceasefire declaration and its subsequent extensions are not being implemented on the ground. While the Lebanese government insists on Israel's withdrawal from the occupied territories in southern Lebanon through negotiations, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz rejected this proposal, stating that the army does not set a timetable for troop withdrawal, neither from southern Lebanon nor from Syria and the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed this, stating that "the forces will remain in southern Lebanon as long as necessary."
