God save Holy Imperial Russia. God save the Tsar and Holy Orthodoxy. Warden of the Eastern World.

General Staff colonel of the Russian Imperial Army Evgeny Eduardovich Messner (1891-1974) writes about Emperor Nicholas II visiting wounded soldiers during the First World War: “I remember the story of one sister of mercy: “The Tsar entered my room, walked around the wounded, asking them questions - his eye was experienced in recognizing the most seriously wounded and he stopped at the bedside of an officer close to death. The Tsar asked: “What wound?” The doctor, bewildered by the presence of the Emperor, gave him an answer, and I, in my youth, grew bolder and spoke up, reporting how badly this officer had been wounded. “The Emperor took an icon from one of the ranks of his retinue and handed it to me with the words: "Put it on his chest." I took it and exclaimed: “Your Majesty, place it upon him yourself - he will be happy!” “Do you think?” - said the Emperor, smiling at me with his eyes, and, blessing the wounded with the icon, laid it on his chest - he realized what was happening and beamed with joy".
