Perth: From Family Time to Chilli Crab Records

This episode sees the Geordie and the Gragok settle into Perth, swapping long stretches of open road for something far more important — family, food, celebrations, and a slower pace of travel. After arriving in Western Australia following a journey that stretched from Warragul in Gippsland across the Nullarbor, this chapter is less about distance… and more about moments. Staying first at Hillside Garden Village in Mount Richon, and later at Serpentine Falls Tasmin Holiday Park, the weeks in Perth are filled with reunions, catch ups, and time spent with those who matter most — including Janice’s mum Joan, dad Brian, sister Diane, and the wider family. There are special occasions too. A 7th wedding anniversary celebrated in style at the Epicurean at Crown Casino, where the Gragok discovers that “too much Singaporean Chilli Crab” may not actually be a real thing. A Mother’s Day lunch with the family… which, quite naturally, also involves another visit to Epicurean. And a birthday celebration that closes out a memorable day exploring the coastline from Rockingham to Fremantle. Throughout the stay, the Gragok reconnects with her roots — visiting restaurants across Perth that serve the flavours of her childhood, from rojak to char kway teow, while the Geordie does his best to keep up, occasionally succeeding… and occasionally deciding once was enough. There are smaller moments too — the ones that make every trip unique. A visit to a persimmon farm (with surprisingly strict handwritten warnings), a reunion with a friend last seen back in 2011, a remote office setup dubbed a “space capsule”, and even a brief mid trip flight back to Melbourne so Janice can attend the Chief Executive Women Gala — trading caravan life for Crown Palladium glamour… if only for 36 hours. There’s time spent exploring Rockingham’s coastline, the historic charm and food culture of Fremantle, and plenty of unexpected sights along the way — from statues and strange fruit to car washes with names that raise more questions than answers. This episode is a reminder that travel isn’t always about moving forward — sometimes it’s about stopping, reconnecting, and enjoying where you are. And while this part of the journey slows down, the adventure is far from over. Next, the Geordie and the Gragok turn around and begin the long road home — over 3,500 kilometres back to Warragul, across seven days of driving. Thanks very much for watching.
