The Inquest of John V. Morse - full episode - w/subtitles - w/psychopath Philip Gordon Reed #LizzieB
John Morse was the first person that gave his inquest to District Attorney Hosea Knowlton after the suspicious murders of Andrew & Abby Borden on August 4, 1892, just a few hours after he left the house to pursue his errands after spending the night in the same room that Abby's body was found brutally hacked about the head the same way as her husband with no bloody footprints leaving the crime scene. D.A. Knowlton grilled him with questions attempting to piece together a plan with Emma or Lizzie to kill their father and stepmother. Many people believe that Uncle John had something to do with the murders but Morse, a lifelong bachelor, showed he had a deep fondness for the extended family he'd known for over 30 years and was invited back for the noonday meal when he came upon the crowds at the house and a guard at the door. John Morse was a complex and idiosyncratic man that many considered peculiar. He was known to wear the same clothes while traveling and w/o luggage but he described himself as a "man of property and could live w/o working a full-time job." This vagabond existence made him an easy target as the first suspect at a time when the killings of Jack the Ripper were still fresh in everyone's mind and their suspicions of outsiders. Morse was similar to Andrew Borden when it came to his extreme frugality and they often gave each other advice on investing in real estate. In many ways, John and Andrew were "like brothers from another mother." I think it may have devastated him to learn that his dear brother-in-law and wife whom he'd known on the warmest of terms for nearly 35 years were so brutally hacked inside their home just a few hours after he left there in the morning. We saw a deeper, more emotional side of John's character during the Inquest of Charles Sawyer, a painter that stood guard at the front door when he revealed that Morse was overcome with emotion upon first learning of the killings from maid Bridget Sullivan as he cried out "LIZZZZEEEEEE!!! WHAT IN GOD's NAME HAS HAPPENED HERE?? WHAT KIND OF A GOD WOULD ALLOW SUCH A THING TO HAPPEN??" His Inquest will be forthcoming. Andrew Borden invited John back at breakfast to return for the noonday meal, their Supper, and could have become a victim himself but instead ended up as FRPD's first suspect. What saved him was a clear lack of a motive, his authenticity, and a photographic memory of all the people and places he encountered while in the downtown area of Fall River and their corroborating accounts.
