The Ruvuma Regional Metrology Authority has conducted an inspection and verification exercise of fuel vending machines and measuring equipment at gas stations within Songea Municipality, as part of efforts to protect the interests of consumers of these products. The exercise aims to ensure that citizens receive fuel and gas at the correct rate according to the value of the money they pay for it, as well as to prevent fraudulent acts that may occur in the trade of these products. In parallel with the inspection, officers from the Metrology Authority provided education to owners of fuel and gas stations as well as citizens on the importance of using verified equipment, how to recognize the certification marks of correct measurements, and consumer rights in obtaining products at the right level. Some citizens of Songea Municipality who witnessed the exercise have praised the measure, saying it will help increase transparency in the fuel and gas trade and ensure that they receive the services they pay for without being abused. Speaking during the inspection, the Ruvuma Regional Measurement Agency Manager, Edward Mkwanjabi, said the aim of the exercise is to protect the interests of consumers and ensure that traders comply with measurement laws and regulations. He said regular inspections help close loopholes for fraud, strengthen trust in business and build confidence in citizens who use oil and gas services. In addition, Mkwanjabi has issued a warning to stations found to be providing services contrary to measurement laws, saying that legal action may be taken against those involved, including a fine ranging from five hundred thousand to 20 million shillings or imprisonment for more than six months according to the law.
