The Ruvuma Regional Secondary Schools (UMISSETA) competition was officially closed today, June 11, 2026, by the Ruvuma Regional Administrative Secretary, Advocate Mary Gasper Makondo, at the Matogoro Secondary School grounds in Songea. The competition aimed to find the best players who will represent Ruvuma Region in the National UMISSETA competition to be held in Iringa Region. At the closing ceremony of the competition, various prizes and certificates of appreciation were awarded to the winners of different sports, with Songea Municipal Council taking the overall victory and being declared the Ruvuma Regional champion for the year 2026. Tunduru came in second place, while Mbinga DC finished in third place. Speaking at the closing of the competition, Advocate Makondo urged education officers, school principals and sports coordinators to ensure that they set up special sports sessions every week to strengthen students' preparations and increase sports competition in schools. He also wished the students who were selected to represent the region all the best, encouraging them to work hard and ensure they return victorious. For her part, the Ruvuma Regional Education Officer, Mwalimu Florence Ngua, said that out of the 754 students who participated in the competition from all eight regional councils, 120 students have been selected to form the Ruvuma Regional team that will participate in the National competition. She explained that the region has great confidence in the team and expects them to do well in the competition. And Hadija Hanzuruni, speaking on behalf of the players, urged parents to give their children the opportunity to participate in school sports, noting that sports are an occupation and are also an important tool for improving physical and mental health.
