Harz im Herbst - die Harzer Schmalspurbahnen

Railway impressions of the three lines of the Harz narrow-gauge railways during the autumn season. The legendary Brocken Railway from Wernigerode to the highest mountain in the Harz Mountains, the Harzquerbahn between Wernigerode and Nordhausen, and the Selketalbahn between Quedlinburg and Hasselfelde. The history of the Harz narrow-gauge railways began over 100 years ago; today, over a million passengers are transported through the Harz Mountains annually on the tracks, which are just one meter wide. For many travelers, autumn is considered the most beautiful time of year on the 140-kilometer-long route network. They are still predominantly operated by steam locomotives, most dating back to the 19th century. A trip on the Brocken Railway – closed for 30 years due to the construction of the Berlin Wall – is still a very special experience for many. Episode 751
