Springs gold rush

What started as a single claim of gold being found in Springs, on Gauteng's East Rand, has drawn hundreds of hopefuls to the area, turning parts of the township into a chaotic digging site. Although there has been no official confirmation of the find, excited gold panners believe this could be a way to change their fortunes. Community members, however, are worried about environmental degradation, as well as their welfare and their livestock.
