Improve Walking After a Stroke | Therapy for Stroke
If you walk with difficulty because your stroke leg stays stiff and difficult to bend, you might want to do the exercises in this video. After stretching your spastic, stiff and straight leg and doing your sitting exercises, you need to do exercises to improve your walking. These exercises are components that is necessary for a proper gait or walking. First we need to practice stretching your stroke leg. Sit on a low chair or a stool. Bring your foot back as far as you can. This will stretch your hip, knee and ankle to bend. Next we need to practice getting up. Sit in front of your sink since this area is the most stable and what I found out makes most patients feel safer when we practice this. Pull up from the sink and practice high squats first. Do 10 and then do another 10 getting all the way up and then sitting all the way down. Third exercise is foot sliding with paper plate. place a paper plate under your stroke leg and slide it back-and-forth 10 times. Support yourself with the kitchen sink Or a walker. Fourth exercise is leg swinging. Bring your stroke leg back while bending your knee and kick it to the front like you are kicking a ball. Hold on to your kitchen sink or counter while doing this for support and safety. Do this 10 times. Fifth exercise is knee up. Still supporting yourself on the kitchen counter or a walker, bring the knee of your stroke leg up as high as you can for 10 times. Sixth exercise is stepping side to side. Step side to side from right to left three times Then rest. And finally the last exercise is walking. Take steps forward and back slowly. Do not overthink but apply the concepts of the previous exercises that we did. Like bringing your hip forward, bending the knee, And keeping your foot and toes sup so you are not dragging your stroke foot when you walk. #strokerecovery #stroke #strokerehab ================================= Disclaimer: This video should not replace the necessity of visiting your doctor or getting your occupational therapy session done.
