Stopping Frémont: Battle of Cross Keys 1862

Banks' forces in the Lower Shenandoah Valley at the Battle of Winchester, Major General Stonewall Jackson hurries south with his Department of the Valley to meet and engage the two Federal commands of Major General John C. Frémont and James Shields. After setting up his army's bivouac around the towns of Port Republic and Cross Keys in early June, Jackson prepares a bold plan to "defeat in detail" Frémont and Shields, preventing the two from linking up and crushing them separately. On June 8th, Frémont's Mountain Department moves to engage Jackson's exposed left flank consisting of Ewell's Division at Cross Keys. In the ensuing Battle of Cross Keys, Jackson will have to rely on Ewell to carry the day if his flank is to remain secure.
