Stettin was Germany's third largest port—a city of shipyards, docks, and nearly 400,000 inhabitants. In 1945, it ceased to exist: devastated by war, it lost almost its entire population. The Poles rebuilt it from scratch—the new Szczecin was to become the Polish Hamburg. Instead, December 1970 brought gunfire to the workers, and in 2009, Brussels' decision brought the shipyard to an end.
