Pennsylvania Railroad 331: A Gateway to The Past [HD]
Recommended Viewing Setting: 1080p60 On this historic journey, Eastern PA Railfan Productions, we pay a visit to a relatively new heritage steam railroad, the Harrisburg, Lincoln, and Lancaster Railroad. The rich history of the line dates back to 1835, when the Harrisburg, Portsmouth, Mountjoy, & Lancaster Railroad was chartered. Construction of this line was completed in 1838 and was used to serve the communities of the Susquehanna River valley to those in Harris Ferry, which is now know as Harrisburg. In 1860, the railroad was then sold to the Pennsylvania Railroad, who conducted operation of the line until 1903, when the track was removed because of the railroad's new mainline that opened through Elizabethtown, PA, which is now seen as the Amtrak line between Harrisburg and Philadelphia. During the life of the HPMtJ&L, the line had even had a United States President on their trackage, when on April 22, 1865, Abram Lincoln's solemn funeral train operated on the line towards his final destination of Springfield, Illinois. After almost 120 years after the remanence of the railroad had been removed, a small portion of the railroad has been revitalized in the form of the Harrisburg, Lincoln, & Lancaster Railroad. Featuring period correct rails and spikes, replicas of the elegant machines that would traverse them, and the historic 275-acre property of The Stone Gables Estate surrounding the line, this small railroad is bringing back a sliver of American history. Pennsylvania Railroad 331, a 4-4-0 American type steam locomotive, may decive most people of it's age. Being constructed in 2009 by the Kloke Locomotive Works as Central Pacific's "Leviathan" #63, the locomotive has visited various states across America, finally finding her permanent home in 2018, The Star Barn. Today, re-numbered and re-lettered to Pennsylvania Railroad 331, the locomotive serves as the railroad's centerpiece. Behind the locomotive, would be a replica of an 1848 Pioneer coach, and the beautiful 2015 built replica of Lincoln's very own car on his funeral train. The car, being built in 1865, would be designated the Private Presidential car "United States", was to be inspected by Lincoln himself, although that would never happen. The car was then used on his funeral train to carry Lincoln himself, with the demise of the car in 1911 by fire damages. The spirit of this beautiful piece of railroad equipment lives on with the near perfect replica we see today. Please, enjoy a stunning October day on the Harrisburg, Lincoln & Lancaster Railroad!
