Where did directors go after leaving film companies? The five major film companies that supported Japanese cinema during the Showa era: Shochiku, Nikkatsu, Daiei, Toho, and Toei. However, from the 1960s to the 1970s, many talented directors left these companies. Nagisa Oshima, Shohei Imamura, Seijun Suzuki, Kaneto Shindo… They didn't simply "go independent." They pioneered a new world of cinema—ATG, independent productions, and independent films—leading Japanese cinema from the "era of companies" to the "era of auteurs." This video explains the greatest turning point in Japanese cinema history through the paths of directors who left film companies. Did Japanese cinema end when they left the companies? Or did a new history begin from there?
