On my second day in Quito, Ecuador, I decided to tackle one of the city's most famous attractions: the Teleférico cable car and the hike towards Rucu Pichincha Volcano. Confident after spending months living at altitude in Ecuador, I assumed my body would have no problem with Quito's thinner air. I was wrong. What started as an exciting day of mountain views and adventure quickly turned into a battle against exhaustion, breathlessness, headaches, and altitude sickness. The higher I climbed, the worse I felt, and eventually I was forced to make a difficult decision.
