I'm using "madroño" wood (Arbutus unedo or strawberry tree) which is a local timber I can get for free when people clean their parcels. It's a very dense and hard wood, and it is supposed to be very good for pipe making. For the styling of the pipe, I wanted to follow the shape of the branch, which in my head looked like a "poker" style pipe, and I wanted it to be bulky and comfortable to hold. I got the stem online, in a pack of 5, and then picked and used the one it was right to me. About dye, I wanted to try something different from the standard leather dye used in pipe making, so I tried some wood stain and inexpensive textile dye. I liked the result since it darkens the wood enough and makes the grain pop. And for rustication, I also wanted to try something different from the standard "nails on a handle" or high speed rotary tools. So I tried my wood burning kit, and to be honest, I'm quite happy with the results. The finishing was done by sanding, polishing, dyeing, light buffing and applying carnauba wax. No problems at all with the wood or the finish on the first few smokes, we'll see on the long term. 👏 Thanks for watching! 👏 #woodworking #woodturning #woodcraft #woodcarving #handmade #handcrafted #woodburning #amateurtools #pipemaking
