We will be bringing you "Exploring Modern Architecture in Yamaguchi," a special feature that visits precious buildings in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Before the demolition of the 61-year-old Shimonoseki City Gymnasium, we will explore its architectural charm and history. This gymnasium was completed in 1963 and built as the badminton venue for the National Athletic Meet held in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It features a unique "H-shaped" roof and was designed by structural engineer Yoshikatsu Tsuboi. He was involved in important projects such as the National Yoyogi Stadium together with architect Kenzo Tange. Influenced by postwar modernism, this building is not just a gymnasium, but Tsuboi's challenges in spatial design can be felt everywhere. In particular, the complex shape of the roof and the view from the bleachers give the impression of a concert hall. However, due to aging and earthquake resistance issues, it was decided to demolish it, and its role was taken over by the new "J:COM Arena Shimonoseki". We will also introduce how the gold aluminum panels used on the roof of the old gymnasium will decorate the entrance of the new gymnasium.
