We bring you "Exploring Modern Architecture in Yamaguchi," a special feature that takes a look at precious architecture in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Of particular interest is the beautiful Western-style building in a corner of Yanai City's white-walled streets. This building was built in 1907 as the head office of Suo Bank. It was established in the 1890s with funds from local volunteers and has the dignity of a bank building. In the 1970s, it was loaned to the city as a library, and in 1998 it was officially donated. It is currently used as a tourist information center. The architectural style of the Western-style building has a Greek and Roman design, and is characterized by balconies, high ceilings, and geometric designs. The safe from that time remains inside, and its sturdy iron door and antique furniture are highlights. Of particular note is the story behind how it was moved using a method called house moving. This was a traditional method of separating the foundation and the top of the building and moving it using rollers, and was done to protect the town's history.
