Session 1: LSA-UNSW Sociolegal Studies Workshop June 2026

Session 1: Sociolegal Studies: research, activism and collaboration in illiberal and authoritarian settings part 1 This is the first of three sessions on sociolegal studies at a workshop hosted by the University of New South Wales, with the support of the Law & Society Association, in June 2025. This session features leading scholars of law and society in Indonesia, Associate Prof Herlambang Wiratraman and Dr Yance Arizona (both of Gajah Mada University) and Associate Prof Fachrizal Afandi (Brawijaya University); Dr Elisabeth Kramer (UNSW), a scholar based who frequently collaborates with Indonesian scholars; and chaired by Professor Melissa Crouch, UNSW. We discuss the creation and role of sociolegal studies associations, teaching sociolegal studies, academic freedom, the challenges in undertaking research on sociolegal studies, and the relationship between research and policy impact/advocacy and activism.
