Ikuno, in Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, flourished as a mining town, often referred to as "Sado's gold, Ikuno's silver." This area was once feared as a "town of death" where the Grim Reaper resided, and was nicknamed "Shinin-no." Eventually, the name was changed to "Ikuno," and silver was discovered there. Full-scale development began during the Muromachi period. During the Edo period, it became an important source of revenue for the shogunate, and during the reign of the eighth shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune, approximately 560 kg of silver was produced each month, equivalent to approximately 70 million yen in today's value. It became a pillar of the Japanese economy. However, due to the harsh labor conditions, the miners' average lifespan was said to be around 30 years. As time passed, at the beginning of the Showa period, a great actor, Shimura Takashi, was born in this area. As time passed, in 1973, the Ikuno Silver Mine finally closed. However, its total output was said to be approximately 1,723 tons, exceeding even the World Heritage Site Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine. In this video, we'll explain the history of Ikuno Silver Mine in an easy-to-understand way, from the legend of the Grim Reaper to the shogunate's financial resources and the birth of Shimura Takashi.
