The Clock My Grandfather Wound Every Night and Forbade Me to Let Stop | A Dark Fantasy Story

Welcome to Nightfall Stories. In the autumn of 1894, a woman of fifty-three named Hester Marlowe came down from London by train to take possession of the house she had inherited from her grandfather Joseph, who had died at the age of ninety-one after living alone in the house for the last forty years of his life. The house was called Coldwell. It stood at the foot of a long valley in the Yorkshire dales. It had belonged to the Marlowes for one hundred and ninety-two years. The old solicitor at Settle read Hester a condition of the inheritance. There was a long-case clock at the head of the upper landing. The clock had been wound every night of every year since 1702 by whichever Marlowe held the house. The clock was not to be permitted to stop. The winding was eight full turns of a brass key that hung on a peg on the inner wall above the landing window. The hour was nine. The duty was nightly. If the clock stopped, the inheritor was not to wind it back up. The inheritor was to send for the housekeeper. In the small first hours of the twenty-third of December, in her seventh week at the house, Hester fell asleep in the chair on the landing. What woke her, what she opened the cupboard her grandfather had told her never to open, what she read in her grandfather's hand inside it, and what she saw when she set the clock running again at five past nine on a winter morning, is the story of this video. A long dark fantasy story for the long quiet nights. Settle in by the fire. There is no hurry. The duty is the keeper's and the keeper's alone.
