The Sister Who Did Not Come Down from the Upper Room | A Dark Fantasy Story

Welcome to Nightfall Stories. In the late spring of 1887, a woman of thirty four named Margaret Ainsworth travelled north from London to take possession of a small lakeside house in the Cumbrian fells that had been left to her by her great-aunt Charlotte. Charlotte had lived alone at Holmwood House for forty three years, ever since the death of her elder sister Eleanor at the age of twenty in the deep winter of 1844. Margaret had spent the previous winter alone in her London rooms, recovering quietly from a broken engagement, reading more than she had read in years, and waiting for the next shape of her life to make itself visible. She did not know, when she arrived at Holmwood, what waited for her there. The old housekeeper, Mrs Pendle, who had served at the house for thirty eight years, told her on the first evening — in the slow gentle way of an old woman who had been keeping a small private rhythm with the family for many decades — about the room at the end of the upper hall that had been Eleanor's. The room that had been kept, untouched, for forty three years. The room that her aunt Charlotte had never quite let go of. And about Eleanor, who had died at twenty, but who had not, in the slow private way of some young women who die in their parents' houses, ever quite left. What Margaret found at Holmwood in the slow gentle months that followed, and what she chose to do when she met her great-aunt at last, is the story of this video. A long quiet gothic story for the long quiet nights. Settle in by the fire. Let the lake be still outside the windows. Listen carefully.
