In this first episode of season 5 of Always in Motion, we begin a trilogy dedicated to cardiovascular training, with the goal of establishing a solid foundation and debunking several of the most common myths surrounding "cardio." Throughout the episode, we revisit a key question: What is cardio, really? Far from being just running, cycling, or using machines, cardiovascular training is presented as the system that sustains movement over time, integrating strength, energy, metabolism, and motor control. It's not just about the heart, but about the entire body's capacity to produce and sustain force according to the task at hand. We explore how movement is generated, from the nervous system to muscle contraction, understanding the central role of ATP and how the different energy systems allow us to move quickly, at intermediate speeds, or in a sustained manner. From this, the differences between intensity, volume, and effort are clarified—concepts that are often confused and are fundamental for properly programming training. The episode delves into the three major energy systems—phosphagen, glycolytic, and oxidative—explaining when they predominate, what types of movements they support, and why not everything that is "tiring" is high-intensity. This chapter also addresses why cardio shouldn't be seen as filler, punishment, or solely as a tool for "burning fat," but rather as a sustained expression of strength and a cornerstone of health and performance. This chapter aims to foster critical thinking, encourage questioning established norms, and provide a conceptual framework that will allow us to delve deeper into the dosage, monitoring, and prescription of cardiovascular training in future episodes. We're still moving. See you in part two.
