Euston Arch: The Forgotten Gateway of London

In 1838, a seventy-foot stone gateway rose at Euston station to announce the arrival of the railway age. For over a century it stood as London's Gateway to the North. In 1962, the British government demolished it for twelve thousand pounds rather than spend one hundred and ninety thousand to save it. Thirty years later, four thousand tons of its stones were found dumped in an East London river. They're still there. This is the story of Britain's greatest architectural crime, and the unfinished fight to undo it. #london #londonhistory
