Commemorating the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) 2025
The International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI), celebrated every 28th September, reaffirms the fundamental right of citizens to access public information and its role in strengthening transparency, accountability, and inclusive participation in governance. The 2025 global theme, “Ensuring Access to Environmental Information in the Digital Age,” is especially relevant for Uganda. Despite progress in establishing policies and frameworks to address climate change, citizens’ access to information on climate financing, environmental policy implementation, and natural resource management remains limited. Timely and reliable access to environmental information is essential for: ● enabling citizens to hold public institutions accountable, ● strengthening evidence-based journalism, ● empowering communities to participate in climate-related decision-making, and ● ensuring transparency in the management of natural resources and climate finance. To commemorate IDUAI 2025, the Africa Freedom of Information Centre (AFIC), in partnership with Twaweza and the Department of Journalism and Communication at Makerere University, will host a half-day national dialogue.
