Tibetan Festival: The Grandest Horse Racing Festival in Tibet

Damxung Horse Riding Festival, also known as the Dangjiren Horse Racing Festival, has a history of more than 300 years and was listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008. Every year, from August 8th to August 14th, the locals in Damxung country will gather together to have horse race competition and traditional cultural performances for 7 days. During the Damxung Horse Racing Festival, local Tibetan competitors in the horse races wear colorful long-sleeved clothing and hats, and their horses are also decorated with colorful ornaments. Besides, there are also traditional Tibetan sports competitions held during the week, such as yak racing and Tibetan weightlifting. While watching the competitions, you can also enjoy the Tibetan ethnic performances, like Guozhuang Dance and Folk Song duet. Since more and more tourists come to experience this festival in recent years, it has turned out to be one of the most bustling horse racing festivals in Lhasa, Tibet.
