Jamia Masjid Munireddy Palya Bangalore - Whispers of the Past

Beyond the bustling streets of modern Bangalore lies Munireddy Palya – a place where history still breathes, and faith still whispers its story. In this episode, we journey into a forgotten chapter of royal patronage, timeless traditions, and a mosque that rose from devotion. A Royal Legacy of Dussehra Long before skyscrapers and highways, this hamlet outside Srirangapatna and Mysore basked in the glow of royal favor. Munireddy Palya is the only place in Bangalore to have enjoyed the Wodeyars’ patronage for Dussehra celebrations. It began in 1914, under the visionary reign of Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV. Even today, the Dussehra Pallaki glows with the same pomp and grace, echoing the Mysore Kingdom’s grandeur. Birth of a Mosque, Blossoming of Faith In 1921, amidst the bliss of these celebrations, a modest mosque emerged – Jamia Masjid Munireddy Palya. It was the lone sanctuary for worshippers of the region, standing as a beacon of faith for the surrounding agrarian hamlets. Munireddy Palya itself traces its roots to the Vijayanagar Empire, referenced in municipal records and collective memory for over 110 years. Named after a local zamindar, it evolved from a British-era agrarian hamlet to a vibrant settlement just outside old Bangalore. The mosque’s land was purchased from Krishnappa, a benevolent landlord, and remained under his name until 1942, when it was finally entrusted to the masjid committee. Under the stewardship of Rashid Sahab and Aziz Dastagir Sahab, the mosque flourished. In 1964, land from Nizamuddin was acquired, and by 1965, it came under the Wakf Board. A major expansion followed in 1974. The Visionaries Who Carried the Flame In 2009, Inayatullah – an ex-footballer and international referee – took charge of the mosque committee. His vision reshaped the institution: modernizing its documentation, safeguarding its properties, and ensuring financial independence. Today, salaries for the imam and staff are disbursed on time, with increments and Ramadan bonuses – a dream Inayatullah realized before stepping down. Rasool Shadi Mahal: A Story of Generosity Another jewel of Munireddy Palya is Rasool Shadi Mahal – a humble function hall with a story of sacrifice. In 1965, the mosque committee sought to purchase land for a community hall. The cost was ₹6,000; they had only ₹2,000. Rasool Sahab, a wealthy resident, donated another ₹2,000, and the rest was raised through community efforts. In gratitude, the hall was named after him. Official records still call it Hamdard Baithmal, though locals fondly know it as Rasool Shadi Mahal. Renovations are now awaited to revive its charm. Dussehra: The Beating Heart of Munireddy Palya The Munireddy Palya Dasara Pallaki, started in 1914, remains one of Bangalore’s longest-running grassroots Dussehra traditions. As Bangalore expanded, the village was rechristened J.C. Nagar in the 1980s, honoring Maharaja Jaya Chamarajendra. Yet, “Munireddy Palya” persists in memory, a name tied to its soul. Today, nestled near the TV Tower, War Memorial of Mysore Lancers, Bangalore Palace, and Jayamahal, Munireddy Palya stands as a bridge between the city’s modern aspirations and its timeless past. Jamia Masjid Munireddy Palya isn’t just a mosque. It’s a story – of faith born amidst royal pageantry, nurtured by visionaries, and carried by a community whose whispers of the past still echo through its walls. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #JamiaMasjid, #MunireddyPalya, #Bangalore, #Dussehra, #Wodeyar, #WakfBoard, #RasoolShadiMahal,
