Actor Sadao Abe appeared at the opening stage greeting for his starring film "Lord, It's Interest!" (directed by Yoshihiro Nakamura) held in Tokyo on May 14th. Abe, who plays Kokudaiya Juzaburo, a sake brewer worried about the future of his town, confessed that he voluntarily "fasted" to prepare for the role. "The character's character is performing water purification rituals and fasting, so I thought I'd try a mini-fast. I started drinking enzymes and did it for about three days," he revealed. "There's a scene where I have to take a quick bath, and I did it just for that. I wonder if it was really that meaningful..." he said self-deprecatingly, drawing laughter. "My Lord, It's Interest!" is based on the story "Kokudanya Juzaburo," which appears in Isoda Michifumi's book "Selfless Japanese." The story is set in Yoshioka-juku, a post town in the Sendai domain, in the mid-Edo period, and in order to protect the post town which is impoverished by the collection of annual taxes and forced labor, nine commoners, including Juzaburo, played by Abe, come up with a "Post Town Relief Plan" to lend 1,000 ryo to the domain and distribute the annual interest to all commoners. In attendance at the stage greeting were Abe, Eita, Tsumabuki Satoshi, Takeuchi Yuko, Matsuda Ryuhei, Chiba Yudai, original author Isoda, and director Nakamura, as well as guest former Mayor Asano of Yamato Town in Miyagi Prefecture, which is now Yoshioka-juku. It was also announced that a total of 117,835 yen had been collected in the "money collection project," which began on April 6th with the aim of preserving ancient documents that record the struggles of the common people featured in the film, and Abe handed the list to Mayor Asano.
