On 19 October 1982, former Prime Minister Harold Macmillan delivered the first Carlton Lecture at the Conservative Party's Carlton Club in London. In a lecture titled "Civilisation Under Threat", the 88-year-old Macmillan presented a grand, sweeping account of the history of the world, and the comparitively young phenomenon of "human civilisation".
