On 22 November 1991, exactly one year after her resignation from 10 Downing Street, former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was interviewed by ITN’s Michael Brunson. The focus of the interview was on Mrs Thatcher’s opposition to the European Monetary Union (EMU), and the broader issue of Britain’s relationship with Europe. Over the course of a 40-minute interview, the former Conservative leader argued for a referendum on the UK's place in the European Community, which she believed was at risk of becoming a "federation" ruled by European Commission officials "thirsty for power", robbing Britain of its parliamentary sovereignty.
