The Danish Nazi Party of Frits Clausen: the Failed Danish Führer
The Danish Nazi Party, officially known as the National Socialist Workers’ Party of Denmark (DNSAP), was founded in 1930 and led by Frits Clausen, a rural doctor from North Schleswig. Clausen sought to model the movement on Hitler’s German NSDAP, promoting nationalism, anti-communism, and antisemitism. However, despite Clausen’s efforts to appeal to Danish patriotism, the party never gained significant support. It peaked around 1943 with about 20,000 members but failed to win mass backing even during the German occupation of Denmark. Clausen envisioned Denmark as part of a greater Germanic Reich and cooperated closely with the Nazi occupiers, which made him deeply unpopular among Danes. After the war, the party was banned, and Clausen was imprisoned for collaboration but died in custody in 1947. The DNSAP remains a symbol of Denmark’s small yet visible collaborationist current during World War II.
